Harvest casual applications now open

Each year, thousands of casual workers help us with the monumental task of moving millions of tonnes of grain safely and efficiently into our receival sites across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.  

Each season is different, but typically harvest starts around late September in Central Queensland; mid-October in Southern Queensland and Northern NSW; and late October to early November in Southern NSW and Victoria.

Casual role responsibilities include:

General labouring  

  • Monitor the flow of grain from truck unloading and onto equipment and into storage (shed, silo, bunker). 
  • Ensure a clean work area (sweeping, shovelling and blowing down dust). 
  • Protect and cover the grain in our bunker storage using tarps. 
  • Operate equipment including tractors, augers and drive-over hoppers. 

Grain sampling  

  • First point of contact for growers and truck drivers coming to the site. 
  • Spear truck to obtain grain samples using manual or automatic spears. 
  • Test grain samples for protein, moisture and contaminants against specifications. 
  • Enter data into our systems as per compliance requirements. 
  • Maintain a neat and tidy work area. 

Laboratory assistance 

  • Analyse grain samples against quality specifications. 
  • Analyse barley samples for germination. 
  • Enter data into our systems. 
  • Provide general support to the laboratory supervisor. 

Weighbridge operations 

  • Enter data on truck weight and data into our system as per compliance regulations. 
  • Answer all telephone calls to the site office. 
  • Perform basic administrative duties in support of the site supervisor/manager. 
  • Maintain a neat and tidy work area. 

To be considered for casual employment during harvest, you must:  

  • Be available to commence work from September through to December (depending on your preferred location); 
  • Be at least 18 years old or have the permission of a parent / guardian if younger; 
  • Be an Australian citizen or hold a valid work visa and provide proof of your right to work, and 
  • Be capable and willing to work in an outdoor and shift work environment.

Grower Service Centre (Wagga & Tamworth):  

  • Perform office based customer service duties
  • Respond to enquiries via phone and email
  • Work across multiple IT systems to assist growers with harvest administration
  • Full training provided, any experience in Agriculture, Customer Service & Business Administration will be viewed favourably

Frequently Asked Questions – Harvest Casuals

What information do I need to provide in my application?

You don't need to attach your resume to your online application. If you are under 18 years of age, you must upload parental or legal guardian consent. We will let you know what you need to provide further into the recruitment process.
Should you progress in the process, we will ask you to upload (so please have ready to submit):

  • Australian Tax File Number
  • Australian bank details

If you are an Australian citizen, your:

  • Australian passport or ImmiCard; OR
  • Australian birth certificate and a form of photo ID OR
  • Australian citizenship certificate and a form of photo ID

If you are not an Australian citizen, your:

  • Current foreign passport*
  • Please note that we will seek your consent to conduct a Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) Check to confirm visa conditions.
Why am I unable to use a shared email address for my online application?

The email address you provide in your online application is used as a unique way of identifying you throughout the application process. We also use your email address to issue payslips when you work with us. This is why it is important that every applicant provides an email address which is unique to them. There are a number of service providers who offer free email accounts, such as Gmail or Outlook.com.

What is the working environment like?

Work as a harvest casual can involve exposure to challenging environmental conditions such as heat, dust, noise, traffic and high temperatures.

How many hours can I expect to work over harvest?

Harvest Casuals are rostered shifts to meet operational requirements. Shifts can average between 5 hours to 10 hours, depending on the site opening hours. Early shifts, afternoon shifts and night shifts may also be required. Work can be up to several weeks, depending on harvest conditions and operational requirements.

Am I required to work on weekends and public holidays?

Yes. At harvest, our sites operate 7 days a week to meet grower demand. Some of our sites also operate through the night. This means that if you are successful in securing a casual harvest position with us, you may be rostered by your site manager to undertake work on a weekend, public holiday or night shift and it is important that you make yourself available through these periods, within reason. Your site manager will discuss this further with you when you commence and you should let them know if you have an important occasion to take into consideration in rostering you.

How much will I be paid for the work I perform?

Harvest casuals are paid an hourly rate, which can vary between regions, positions and individuals (based on work experience).

Your rate of pay will be confirmed by your site manager on commencement.

How and when do I get paid for the work I perform?

You will be paid on a fortnightly basis (every second week), into your nominated bank account and this will occur on the Thursday of pay week at the latest. The actual day on which your pay reaches your bank account will depend on who you bank with.

Will I be paid for training I undertake?


How do I report earnings for Centrelink?

It is your responsibility to keep record of your hours worked and income earned. We will email you a payslip each fortnight which details the hours worked and paid, allowances, superannuation, tax withheld. We encourage you to keep these payslips stored safely as you may need to access them at a later time. Centrelink provide a range of tools to help you track your income and to understand your reporting requirements.

What happens if I move address or change email address during or after my employment with GrainCorp?

Does my work with GrainCorp count as regional work requirements towards my Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) OR Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)?

The Department of Home Affairs sets the ‘specified work' requirements for subclass 417 and 462 visa holders.

In terms of the subclass 417 visa, specified work is work that is undertaken in a 'specified' industry, in a specified area of regional area. In terms of the subclass 462 visa, specified work is work that is undertaken in a ‘specified’ industry, in a specified area of northern or regional Australia.

How do I work at the same site as another applicant?

There is a place in your online application to indicate the name of another applicant or applicants that you wish to work with.

What should I bring when I go to site?

You should dress for work and weather conditions, including lace-up ankle steel-capped work boots. As many of our sites are quite rural or remote, you should also bring all food for your (up to 10-hour) shift, including at least 2 litres of water. We will provide you Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – high visibility vest, head, eye, ear protection and sunscreen.

Is accommodation available?

You will need to discuss this with your site manager.
